What the monthly payment leaves out when comparing car quotes
Put the monthly payment in context
€299 a month or €350? The smaller number looks cheaper at first. A car quote can also include start fees, mileage charges and payments due later. Using the figures in your own contracts helps you see those amounts and ask about missing terms.
Leasing: include mileage and fees
This fictional example compares two 36-month quotes for the same vehicle, equipment and included services. Planned use is 15,000 km per year for both. All other applicable fees, services and return charges are explicitly zero in this example.
| Quote A | Quote B | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment | €299 | €350 |
| Start fees | €1,200 | €1,200 |
| Excess distance over the term | 15,000 km × €0.15 = €2,250 | €0; planned mileage included |
| Total entered charges | €14,214 | €13,800 |
| Monthly equivalent | €394.83 | €383.33 |
B is €414 lower for these inputs. If B's start fees rise by €600 to €1,800, A is €186 lower instead. Actual contracts may contain other charges.
Check the refund terms and caps for unused kilometres as well. A deposit ties up cash and is shown separately from charges. Leave an unknown field blank: blank means unknown, while zero explicitly says there is no charge.
The leasing quote calculator compares two entered quotes against your planned distance and each contract's terms. A complete comparison requires equal terms and confirmation that the vehicle, equipment and services match.
Finance: plan for the balloon and the final payment
A low monthly instalment can come with a large balloon payment. Compare the payments stated in the quotes and note how much falls due at the end. Here is a fictional 48-month example:
| Finance A | Finance B | |
|---|---|---|
| Regular instalments | 48 × €199 = €9,552 | 48 × €399 = €19,152 |
| Balloon | €10,000 | €0 |
| Scheduled payments before other fees | €19,552 | €19,152 |
B has €400 fewer scheduled payments. Add €600 in fees to B, with the other inputs unchanged, and A is €200 lower. In A's final month, €10,199 is due: the €199 regular instalment plus the €10,000 balloon. A possible future sale or refinancing does not automatically remove that obligation from the comparison.
The car finance calculator compares entered payment schedules. It keeps the instalment count and any different final regular instalment, upfront fees, balloon and end charges separate. A nominal-rate estimate is a separate calculation and does not replace the payment schedule in an actual quote.
Car subscriptions: distinguish intended use from commitment
How long do you want the car, and how long must you pay under the offer? Those periods can differ. Check the billing basis, such as a calendar month, 30 days or an explicitly stated irregular period, and the conditions for continuing.
The car subscription cost calculator considers one or two entered offers. It separates committed payments, cash paid during use, later obligations and expected deposit recovery. Check fees, services, mileage terms and any card hold too. A deposit returned in full does not increase contract charges, but it ties up cash until repayment. A card hold is not a paid deposit. Notice and billing terms depend on the contract; not every subscription can be cancelled monthly.
Take the next step with your quotes
Place your offers side by side and mark the missing details. Start with the relevant calculator: leasing, finance or subscription. Enter confirmed figures and ask the provider about missing charges, services and terms. The results help you understand the payments entered; the right contract for you also depends on your needs and its conditions.
