Used Mazda MX-5 ND: strengths, inspection points and market context

Mazda MX-5 ND from 2015: driving appeal, gearbox checks, a dated asking-market snapshot and a KBA recall lead.

What to verify before the viewing

The MX-5 ND offers direct steering, low weight and a quick roof. Before comparing prices, establish whether the car is a Roadster or RF, its 1.5- or 2.0-litre engine, model year, gearbox, servicing, tyres, brakes and any modifications.

This guide covers the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 ND on the German market from 2015 onward, as the soft-top Roadster or RF with a 1.5- or 2.0-litre petrol engine. It excludes the NA, NB, NC, Fiat/Abarth 124, import variants and heavily modified cars. The model year, engine, gearbox, roof version and VIN need to be confirmed for the individual vehicle.

Before the viewing, clarify these points: 1. Identify the ND model year, engine, gearbox and Roadster/RF version exactly. 2. Request evidence for servicing, use, modifications and any gearbox work. 3. Check Mazda/KBA recall status by VIN and request completion evidence.

If you already have one concrete listing, a Listing Audit can help sort the visible information, missing evidence, and next seller questions before you travel.

Why the MX-5 ND appeals – and what AUTO BILD says to inspect

AUTO BILD describes the ND, sold since 2015, as a highly engaging roadster with a quick roof and relatively few weaknesses overall. Its review rates the fourth generation very positively while acknowledging the tight, compromise-led nature of a small two-seater.

The report identifies early gearbox versions as a concrete inspection point: difficulty shifting from second to third or third to fourth can indicate a defect. That finding comes from a used-car test published in 2020 and does not show that every early car is affected. The exact model year, a road test and invoices matter more than a blanket assumption.

AUTO BILD said five years was too early for a final long-term corrosion verdict. The underside, suspension parts, roof, drains and moisture therefore remain sensible individual-car checks. Vehilo did not road-test an MX-5 for this article; these prompts are not a diagnosis or an in-house driving review.

Market snapshot: asking prices for the MX-5 ND

FAQ snapshot on 5 September 2026: AutoScout24 reported about 418 MX-5 ND offers and 34 new listings in the previous seven days. The median asking price was €30,467 and the middle 50% ran from €26,473 to €32,912. Dealers accounted for 92% of adverts and private sellers for 8%.

The stock included 280 adverts classified as convertibles and 134 as coupés, plus about six automatics. Many cars were from 2025 and 2026; Roadster and RF, 1.5- and 2.0-litre engines, used and very young cars are mixed. That composition can materially influence the median.

Our market view: supply is visible but not homogeneous. Thirty-four newly posted adverts are not a sales figure. The figures describe advertised stock and asking prices, not completed sales, transaction prices or ownership transfers, not a valuation, and not a value, trend or resale forecast.

Recall lead: interpreting KBA 15657R / AS025A

KBA reference 15657R with Mazda code AS025A was published on 28 October 2025 for MX-5 production from 14 May 2015 to 28 April 2018. An incorrectly secured fuel line may crack, allowing fuel to leak and creating a fire risk. The remedy replaces it with a modified part.

The CSV lists 20,763 potentially affected vehicle parts and accessories worldwide and 4,088 in Germany. Known incidents are recorded as “N/A”, which is not a zero-incident claim. The campaign is marked “überwacht” (monitored), which does not establish completion on an individual car.

The row names MX-5 and a production period, but not the ND sub-version, engine, gearbox or an individual VIN. It proves neither that every MX-5 is affected nor the status of a specific car, and it is not a complete MX-5 recall list. Check the VIN through Mazda's official recall information or a Mazda dealer and request written completion evidence.

Common inspection areas

The main inspection areas are: 1. Shift quality and documented gearbox work on early cars 2. Soft top/RF mechanism, seals, drains and moisture 3. Tyres, brakes, suspension, underside and hard use 4. Modifications, registrations and retained original parts

Our view: AUTO BILD praises the driving experience and limited weaknesses but flags shift problems on early gearbox versions as an inspection point. The AutoScout24 snapshot includes very young and new cars and is not a valuation. The KBA row is a recall lead, not a complete recall history or VIN clearance.

Seller questions and inspection priorities

Questions for the seller: 1. Which engine, gearbox and roof version do the vehicle documents identify? 2. Are there invoices for gearbox, clutch, roof, suspension or accident repairs? 3. Has the car attended track days, autocross or drift events? 4. Which wheel, suspension or exhaust changes are registered, and are the original parts retained?

Inspection priorities on site: 1. Shift the car cold and warm, checking especially second-to-third and third-to-fourth for graunching or resistance. 2. Operate the soft top or RF several times and inspect seals, drains, boot and moisture. 3. Inspect tyre wear, brakes, suspension, underside, jacking points and possible track-use clues. 4. Reconcile mileage trail, servicing, damage, modifications, registrations and recall evidence.

When to slow down or walk away

Slow down when these signals appear: 1. Shifting graunches or resists and earlier gearbox work remains unclear. 2. Roof operation, moisture or repairs are not demonstrated fully. 3. Track use or modifications are disclosed late. 4. The seller will not allow a road test, lift inspection or VIN check.

Does every early MX-5 ND have a gearbox problem?
No. AUTO BILD flags problems on early gearbox versions and difficult shifts as an inspection lead, not a diagnosis for every car. The road test, exact version and repair evidence decide.
Are 34 new listings in seven days sales figures?
No. AutoScout24 describes newly posted adverts and asking stock, not completed sales, transaction prices or ownership transfers.
Does KBA 15657R automatically apply to every MX-5 ND?
No. The row names MX-5 production from a 2015–2018 period but not an individual VIN. Only Mazda's check and completion evidence resolve the specific car.

Sources, limits, and next step

The evidence tiers separate authority or manufacturer sources from buyer guides and owner-reported patterns. Reddit, YouTube, and forums help discover questions for research, but they are not used as standalone proof for public defect claims.

Sources and evidence tiers

This article is buyer guidance, not a technical diagnosis, workshop inspection, guarantee, legal advice, or proof that a specific car has a fault. Model notes are inspection prompts. A specific car still needs history, condition, recall status, and qualified inspection context.
