Buying a used EV in Germany: will it fit your charging routine?
A used EV is more likely to suit your routine if your dependable charging stops can replace the energy your journeys use. Check your routes, charging locations and the car’s charging technology together, as the ADAC buying guide advises.
One weekly shopping stop is not enough in this example
This case is fictional: you drive 200 km between dependable weekly charging opportunities. For this illustration, assume energy use from the battery of 18 kWh/100 km. Your journeys therefore need 200 × 18 / 100 = 36 kWh.
Shopping gives you 45 minutes of usable charging time. We assume that 15 kWh reaches the battery during that stop. This is an illustrative input, not a measurement or advertised charging power multiplied by parking time.
The second scenario requires an additional dependable stop, with evidence that it can add 25 kWh to the battery within this plan.
| Energy in the example week | Shopping only | With an additional stop |
|---|---|---|
| Energy needed for 200 km | 36 kWh | 36 kWh |
| Replenished while shopping, 45 minutes | 15 kWh | 15 kWh |
| Additional replenishment | 0 kWh | 25 kWh |
| Total replenishment | 15 kWh | 40 kWh |
| Replenishment minus driving needs | −21 kWh | +4 kWh |
We compare energy used from and added to the battery; energy billed at the charger can be higher because of charging losses.
Why a bigger battery does not fix the plan
Shopping alone leaves 21 kWh unreplaced each week. A bigger battery can hold more energy and allow longer intervals between stops. It does not make up the recurring shortfall. We would change the charging plan first.
With the additional documented stop, the calculation gives 40 kWh replenished against 36 kWh needed. We would then keep the candidate under consideration. The 4 kWh surplus is not a general reserve recommendation: cold, weather, routes and conditions can change demand. Usable battery energy must also cover your journeys between individual stops.
Which charging equipment would change the outcome?
You can charge more often, use an additional dependable opportunity or consider a car that can replenish enough energy during your actual usable stops. Different equipment helps only if it addresses the specific bottleneck. It cannot create extra time or access to an unavailable charging point.
If this example still relies on a single 45-minute stop, evidenced replenishment would need to cover that example week’s 36 kWh requirement. A high advertised maximum power does not establish this. With alternating-current (AC) charging, the exact vehicle version’s equipment matters. Our Corsa-e guide explains how vehicle equipment and charging-point capability fit together.
Ask about the candidate: Which charging equipment does this particular car have, and what verifiable information shows the energy it can replenish at my charging point within my usable time window? Without suitable evidence, you cannot yet tell whether the car fits your charging plan.
When a battery percentage still needs explaining
The AVILOO battery check described by ADAC records vehicle and test data and considers extractable energy relative to the battery when new. An unexplained percentage does not replace that basis. Our battery-certificate guide, in German helps you interpret vehicle identity, date, method and what the energy figure refers to. Ask for missing information before deciding.
